Scenar Therapy

What is Scenar? SCENAR (Self Controlled Energo Neuro Adaptive Regulator) is a hand held medical device that delivers non invasive, non toxic, computer modulated, therapeutic electro stimulation onto and through the skin. It is a biofeedback device involving no drugs and no surgery that aids the body in the self healing process. The sole purpose of SCENAR Therapy is to stimulate the body's own natural healing process. SCENAR is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine - acupuncture and zonal contact massage - combined with the most up to date electronic technology. SCENAR expertise focuses on the optimal points and zones to facilitate change.

Essentially, SCENAR prompt’s the body’s own adaptive processes and facilitates restoration of homeostatic function; thereby reducing stress and inflammation and effectively changing symptoms of pain and dysfunction.

Can SCENAR help Me?

If you are in pain - then SCENAR Therapy can help you!

The effectiveness of SCENAR Therapy for Pain relief is substantial and lasts longer than other pain control methods. Macquarie University (in Sydney, Australia) randomized control trial using a SCENAR Personal device) versus conventional TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator) and this comparative test showed 'dramatic and sustained results' with chronic pain reduction, functional improvements and general health restoration.

SCENAR therapy does not treat disease - it restores health. SCENAR therapy involves finding imbalances (asymmetries) in the body and treating them accordingly. SCENAR Therapy does not act upon one specific part of the body or organ, but on the WHOLE body. The sole purpose of SCENAR Therapy is to stimulate the body's own natural healing process.

How does SCENAR work?

Our health relies on the continuous exchange of information within the body. Each and every function of the body is interrelated and works in harmony with other functions - that is until stress, injury or disease disrupts that communication. The SCENAR communicates with all functions of the body through direct contact on the skin, tuning into the body's inner communication, and understanding the body's needs from the signals being sent back and forth.

The SCENAR responds to these signals accordingly with gentle electrical impulses that communicate with the nervous system to stimulate the body's own healing process, so your body can operate with maximum efficiency once again.

This process used by the SCENAR is called 'Reflex Biofeedback', which is an ongoing, reflex conversation that proceeds at real-time, in biological speed and requires no conscious mental activity.

scenar-closeThe SCENAR device sends out a series of electrical signals through the skin and measures the response. Each signal is only sent out when a change, in response to the previous signal, is recorded in the electrical properties of the skin. Visible responses include reddening of the skin, numbness, stickiness (the device will have the feeling of being magnetically dragged), a change in the numerical readout and an increase in the electronic clattering of the device.

The body can get accustomed to a stable pathological state, which may have been caused by injury, or disease. SCENAR acts to activate neuro and regulatory peptides which are thought to reestablish the body's natural physiological state and are responsible for the healing process. As these peptides last up to several hours, the healing process will continue long after the treatment is over. The large quantity of neuro peptides and C-fibers in the Central Nervous System can also result in the treatment on one area aiding with other chemical imbalances, correcting sleeplessness, appetite and even behavioral problems.

SCENAR assists the trained clinician to identify  specific points of imbalance and allows the clinician insight and ability to target the specific area/areas of imbalance.

What conditions can SCENAR treat?

SCENAR has been found to be effective for a very broad range of diseases, including diseases of the digestive, cardio-vascular, respiratory, musculo-skeletal, urinary, reproductive and nervous systems.

It is also useful for managing ear, nose and throat diseases, eye diseases, skin conditions and dental problems. It has also been found beneficial in burns, fractures, insect bites, allergic reactions, diseases of the blood and disorders involving immune mechanisms; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic disorders; stress and mental depression, etc. It is known to give real relief from many types of pain.

"A big thank you to Clare...
At my first physical therapy appointment, I showed up with a skeptical view regarding the benefits of PT, having had prior experiences that didn’t always help. Following my general practitioners recommendation, I went to see Clare at Bellingham Physical Therapy and was thrilled by the results. I arrived with pain in both knees unable to do the things I love most including running and hiking our local trails, and left a few months later running a 5K and able to enjoy my outdoor activities without reservations. A big thank you to Clare and the staff at Bellingham Physical Therapy for providing a pleasant healing atmosphere and helping me get results; I couldn’t have done it without you."   - Jean W.

How do I schedule follow-up appointments?

Appointments are made with our front office staff. Please call (360) 647-0444 to schedule an appointment.

When should I arrive?

If you haven’t completed the new patient forms ahead of time, please arrive at least 30 minutes before your first appointment. If you’ve completed the necessary forms and bring them with you, you may arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

Please bring the following:

  • Completed new patient intake forms 1 & 2
  • Insurance card
  • Doctor’s referral (if needed)
  • Appropriate clothing (see below)
  • Any operative reports
  • Diagnostic tests (x-rays, MRI, etc.)
  • Protocols your physician has given you
  • A list of any questions you might have

What should I wear?

We suggest you bring along appropriate clothing:
  • Shorts are recommended for lower back, knee, ankle, or foot conditions.
  • Women should wear a sports bra or tank top for back, neck, or shoulder conditions.
If you forget to bring recommended clothing, or if acquiring the clothing is an issue, we are happy to provide t-shirts, shorts, sports bras and medical gowns to accommodate.

What if I am unable to make my appointment?

To accommodate all our patients, reserving time slots for treatments is very important to operate our facilities efficiently. Cancelling at the last minute or failing to show for a session limits our ability to meet the scheduling needs of our other patients. Therefore, it’s important for all of our patients to understand that Bellingham Physical Therapy might charge a $50 fee to clients who fail to show up for an appointment without calling 24 hours in advance to cancel.

How long will my visits last?

Your visit with one of our physical therapists will vary from 30 to 60 minutes.

How often will I have therapy sessions?

A treatment program typically consists of 2 to 3 sessions per week.

What types of treatment may I receive?

You may receive modalities as needed (ultrasound, electrical stimulation, infrared and forms of these), joint mobilization, SCENAR therapy technique with therapeutic exercise in many forms and progressions, structured home exercise plans and/or client education. These also encompass intervention. All of our treatment sessions are individually tailored to each client, so it’s difficult to create a “standard” treatment list.

Will I see the same physical therapist each time?

We make every effort to have you see the same physical therapist each time. On the rare occasion that this isn’t possible, another one of our trained physical therapists will cover your appointment as needed, until your primary therapist’s schedule opens up. Less than 5% of our clients see more than one physical therapist for their treatments.

Will my doctor be kept updated on my treatments and progress?

After an initial evaluation, your physical therapist will write a note to send to your doctor regarding the findings, rehab potential, and plan of care. Before each doctor follow-up visit, we will send a progress note with updates and recommendations, regarding your plan of care. These progress notes are sent every 4 weeks as needed. We will also make phone calls, write emails or send faxes as necessary to communicate any necessary information to supports your treatment.

Am I eligible for physical therapy?

Anyone is eligible for physical therapy — it’s just a matter of working out the financial compensation options. We accept private insurance, private payments, Medicare and student insurance. If physical therapy is not an appropriate or necessary solution for you, we will determine this early on and refer you to the appropriate healthcare provider.

Do I need to see a doctor first?

The state of Washington is a direct access state, which means everyone has access to physical therapy without a written order.  If you want to have your insurance cover physical therapy you will need to contact your insurance company to see if they require a written order, prescrition or referral.

Will my insurance cover physical therapy?

We accept most non-HMO insurance carriers, but you are still responsible for obtaining your policy details, such as:

  • What coverage your policy has
  • Your co-payment amount
  • What remainder (if any) you are expected to pay
